Timber-frame wall, roof and floor build-ups. Every layer counted.

Three walls, two roofs and two floors our houses are made of. Each has a hygrothermal report: U-value, phase shift, the temperature in every layer and a condensation check. Look at the layers, compare the numbers, download the sheet.

Build-ups

Layer by layer

Pick the element and the version. The layers open up in 3D, and one button shows them the way the report draws them: to scale, with the studs at their spacing and the dimensions. The numbers come from Ubakus reports for winter: −5 °C outside, 20 °C inside. Hover a layer to see its thickness and its place in the temperature profile.

Winter

Where the heat stays

The temperature profile through the element at −5 °C outside and 20 °C in the room. The width of the bands is the thickness of the layers, the drop of the line their thermal resistance: the steeper, the more the layer insulates.

Calculated as in the reports: surface resistances 0.25 inside and 0.04 outside (DIN 4108-3), along the insulation between the members. None of the seven build-ups condenses.

Summer

The heat arrives in the morning

The phase shift says how many hours the outside temperature peak takes to reach the inner surface, the amplitude damping how many times weaker it gets. A day of 18 °C at night and 34 °C at 3 pm, a steady 24 °C inside:

A simplified model: a daily sine wave and a constant room temperature, damping and shift from the reports. A roof surface gets hotter than the air, so the differences in an attic are larger, but the proportions between the versions stay the same.

Why this way

No polystyrene, no foam, no guessing

  • 01

    Diffusion-open

Premium and Comfort have no foil. The OSB board inside slows the water vapour down and the wood-fibre board outside lets it out: the diffusion resistance s_d of the whole wall is 3.3 m, in Standard with its membrane 10.2 m. Moisture that gets into the element has a way out.

  • 02

    Checked for condensation

Each of the seven build-ups went through an Ubakus 2D-FE calculation: 90 days at −5 °C and 80 % humidity outside, 20 °C and 50 % inside. None of them condenses, and the inner wall surface stays at 19 °C, no conditions for mould.

  • 03

    No polystyrene, no foam

The insulation is blown-in STEICOzell wood fibre, which fills every gap between the studs and does not settle, plus wood-fibre boards outside. We use neither polystyrene nor sprayed PUR foam: the element stays open and can one day be taken apart.

  • 04

    Mass that works in summer

55 kg per square metre of the Premium wall and the high heat capacity of wood fibre give an 18-hour phase shift. The peak of the heat reaches the inside in the early morning, 94 times weaker, when it is easiest to air out.
