From our houses

Boards on the facade: vertical, horizontal, black, natural

Six houses we built with timber on the facade. The same board makes a different house depending on direction, width and finish.

Six boards

Boards for cladding, soffits, decking and floors.

Plain planed for a modern facade, profiled tongue-and-groove for soffits and walls, rough Herrgårdspanel the Scandinavian way, grooved or treated smooth for a deck, and tongue-and-groove for a floor that is a ceiling underneath.

  1. Planed cladding board
    01

    Planed cladding board

Scandinavian spruce planed on four sides, in two sections. Laid vertically board on board it makes a modern, rhythmic facade; with a gap, a modern open cladding. Finish as you like: a hybrid stain or a film-forming preservative in the colour of your choice.

  2. Södra profiled board, tongue and groove
    02

Södra profiled board, tongue and groove

Thin, light and tight: the tongue sits in the groove, so the wall is closed. The faza variant has a clear V between the boards, softline a soft rounding and a fine gap between the boards. The usual choice for soffits and interiors.

  3. Herrgårdspanel Södra, rough cladding board
    03

    Herrgårdspanel Södra, rough cladding board

The Swedish manor profile, overlapping: the rough side out holds paint and stain twice as long as a smooth one, and the overlap sheds water without sealing. No relief cuts, so the board stays straight.

  4. Grooved decking board

    Grooved decking board

28 mm Scandinavian spruce with a grooved face that does not slip when wet and drains water. On deck pedestals and stainless screws, oiled once a year, it lasts for years.

  5. Treated decking board, smooth
    05

    Treated decking board, smooth

Spruce 28 × 120, pressure-treated (NTR, green), without grooves: a smooth surface that is easy to clean and oil. The treatment protects the wood inside, the oil keeps the colour on top.

  6. Flooring board, tongue and groove
    06

    Flooring board, tongue and groove

Installation

A ventilated facade in four steps

A board on a facade lasts for decades on one condition: it has to dry from both sides. This is how we lay it on our houses.

  1. 01

    Breather membrane on the sheathing

A vapour-open membrane goes onto the wall board: Eurovent Wall Protect or STEICOmulti UDB, joints taped. It stops the wind and any rain that gets through the gaps between boards, and lets vapour from inside out.

  2. 02

    A 38 × 63 batten grid and the gap

We make the grid from 38 × 63 battens: just under 40 mm of ventilation gap, open at the bottom and under the eaves, with an insect mesh. Vertical boards get a second grid: horizontal battens on vertical ones.

  3. 03

Boards, 30 cm above the ground

A2 stainless screws or ring-shank nails, two per board width. The bottom edge at least 30 cm above ground so splashing rain does not wet it. Board on board with about 25 mm overlap, open joint with a 10 to 20 mm gap.

  4. 04

    Protecting the board

Spruce on a facade always gets protection, in one of two ways. GrandProtekt hybrid stain gives colour and shields against sun and water while the wood underneath still breathes. Impra film-forming preservative lays a thin, elastic film on the board without much change to the grain. Decking gets oil. We paint the board ends and every cut before fitting, because that is where wood takes in most water.
