10 Myths About Timber Frame Houses That Poles Still Believe

Timber frame houses are becoming increasingly popular in Poland – they are quick to build, energy-efficient, and modern. Despite this, many myths still circulate around them, often discouraging potential investors. In this article, we will debunk the 10 most common stereotypes about timber frame construction.

1. Timber frame houses are not durable

Myth!
A properly designed and constructed timber frame house can last for decades, even over 100 years. In Scandinavia and Canada, such buildings are the standard.

2. Timber frame houses are not suitable for the Polish climate

False.
In fact, timber houses are dominant in countries with much harsher weather conditions – such as Norway, Canada, and Sweden. With proper insulation, a timber frame house performs excellently both in freezing winters and hot summers.

3. Wooden houses burn easily

One of the most common myths.
In reality, a properly protected and encased timber frame structure meets the same fire safety standards as masonry buildings. What’s more, thick wooden beams burn more slowly than thin steel elements, which lose their strength quickly under high temperatures.

4. A timber frame house is just a “shack” or “cabin”

This myth comes from old, poor-quality projects.
Modern prefabrication technologies, precise machines, and high-quality wood ensure that today’s timber houses look and function like elegant villas.

5. Every step can be heard in a timber frame house

That’s a thing of the past.
With proper acoustic insulation and careful assembly, a wooden house can be just as quiet – or even quieter – than a masonry house.

6. Wood is easily damaged by insects and fungi

Only if it is not properly prepared.
In professional construction, kiln-dried wood is used, making it resistant to pests and mold. Additionally, impregnations and ventilation systems protect the structure.

7. Timber houses lose heat quickly

Quite the opposite.
Thanks to excellent insulation (for example, wood fiber insulation such as STEICO Zell), a timber frame house can be passive – meaning it consumes minimal energy for heating.

8. Timber houses are cheaper because they are worse

Not true.
The price depends on the standard, materials, and technology used. In many cases, construction costs are similar to masonry houses, but the completion time is much shorter.

9. It is hard to sell a timber house

On the contrary – more and more people are looking for energy-efficient, eco-friendly homes. In Western Europe and Scandinavia, timber construction is the norm, which means the value of such houses is rising.

10. Wooden houses have a worse indoor climate

Another myth.
Wood naturally regulates air humidity and creates a healthier indoor climate. As a result, the air feels fresher, and interiors are less prone to dryness.

Timber frame houses are not inferior to masonry houses – in many ways, they outperform them in terms of comfort, energy efficiency, and sustainability. Most myths stem from poor-quality projects built many years ago. Today, with modern technologies and experienced construction companies, timber frame houses are a safe and long-term investment.
